Salesforce.com has been successful in gaining traction in their Chatter enterprise social networking platform. I think Chatter is great and in the long run will most likely be the most effective way for sales teams to communicate with each other openly and will help our company in growing our market share.
It is important to note that Chatter currently have limitations of going across multiple SFDC orgs, instances and free Chatter user accounts not created in your primary instance. For example, if you wanted to create a private group to collaborate with someone such as a partner you are working with on a project, you can’t invite someone outside your org to participate. You have to have an admin setup that person in your instance as at least a fee Chatter license to be able to access your instance.
While Chatter allows the ease of content sharing such as documents, links and comments, there are other tools such as Yammer and Jam that have more collaborative offerings such as creating blogs, wikis, and private cross company group creation without admin assistance in adding outside users into the system.
If your organization already has SFDC and ALL of your employees are full users in SFDC, then Chatter is an easy reach. If you are a company like ours with many different systems and only the Sales users are in the system and free Chatter licenses are added on a need only basis for other employees, then you might want to go with the mindset of segregating Chatter to be the primary “Sales” collaboration portal in your company and have a general collaboration portal that all of your users can easily be maintained with in that is synched with an HRIS system like the SuccessFactors Jam product.
SFDC Chatter has been aggressive adding new features, such as the ability to mention another person within a comment using the “@” symbol. They also added a chat box and the ability to private message other online Chatter users.
